2010 Graduations and Achievements

As always, we have an outstanding and illustrious group to commemorate.  Mazal tov to ALL these children and their families on their graduations and achievements...


Graduates:

Jason Aronson, son of Helene and Michael Aronson, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree from the Business school at Cornell University.

Philip Cohn-Cort, son of Yvonne Cort and Dennis Cohn, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East.  He’ll be attending the University of Rochester in the fall, and is planning to major in computers.

Samantha Delouya, daughter of Shari and David Delouya, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East and will be attending Cornell University.

Alexandra Diamond, daughter of Samantha and Mark Diamond graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East and is attending SUNY Binghamton in the fall.

Hillary Goodman, daughter of Barbara Roy Goodman, graduated from Hofstra University with her Masters in Speech Pathology

Emily Figueroa, daughter of Leslie and Ray Figueroa, graduated from Walt Whitman High. She received an academic award from the Edward J. Cush Scholarship Fund, and will be attending LIM College in Manhattan, where she will be studying the business of fashion, majoring in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising with a concentration in Fashion Public Relations.

Adam S. Greenblatt, son of Dorie and Mark Greenblatt, graduated from Brandeis University with a BS in Neuroscience, a BS in Biology and a minor in Near Eastern Judaic Studies.  Adam was on the Dean's List and accepted a position at the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Chelsea Harris, daughter of Caasi and Keith Harris, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School and won the Silver Medal Band Award for her many accomplishments on the flute.  She will be attending the University of Maryland in the fall.

Rebecca Harris, daughter of Caasi and Keith Harris, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School, where she won the Outstanding Athlete Award as Most Valuable Player on the Varsity Cheerleading Team.  She’ll be attending the Honors Program at the University of Delaware this fall.

Nava Jacknis, daughter of Suri and Rabbi Ian Jacknis, graduated from Walt Whitman High School.  She’ll be attending the NATIV Program at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem this coming year and then returning to attend Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Jack Kaye, grandson of Susan and Paul Kaye, graduated from Jericho High School and will be attending the Price Waterhouse Scholars Business program at Binghamton University.

Samara Kelhoffer, daughter of Caryn and Kevin Kelhoffer, is moving up from Paumanok Elementary School to West Hollow Middle School.

Jamie Kralstein, daughter of Almarie and Evan Kralstein, moved up from Maplewood Intermediate School to Silas Wood.

Seth Kunoff, son of Shari and Marty Kunoff, is moving up from Chestnut Hill Elementary to West Hollow Middle School

Cory Kurtz, son of Maya and Bruce Kurtz, moved up from Candlewood Middle School to Half Hollow Hills High School West.

Tyler Kurtz, son of Maya and Bruce Kurtz, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School West and will be attending Ithaca College in August.

Jordana Lanz, daughter of Leora and Alain Lanz, finished up at Stimson Middle School and will start Walt Whitman High School in the fall.

Zachary Lanz, son of Leora and Alain Lanz, is moving up from the Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center to Stimson Middle School.

Joelle Lichtman, daughter of Gwen and Stu Lichtman, received a Master of Arts in Design and Environmental Analysis from Cornell University.  During the past year, she has also become a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) and a LEED Green Associate.

Adam Luper, son of Gail Glickman and Alan Luper, graduated from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington with a major in Finance and a minor in Sociology.  He is traveling in Israel as part of the Israel Reloaded program, and will begin work in September as a trader trainee at Hunter Douglas Metals, Inc. in Chicago.

Jillian Melnick
, daughter of Amelia and Warren Melnick, graduated from Walt Whitman High School.  She is the winner of a Hunter Community Full Tuition Scholarship to Hunter College, where she will attend school this fall.  Jillian made the Principal's List at Whitman, was a National Merit Commended Scholar and a National Hispanic Merit Scholar.  She was the recipient of a PTA Athletic Scholarship, and earned a national ranking in fencing.  Jillian placed second in the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital Fundraiser Fencing Tournament.

Jackson Mlawer, son of Barbara and Ira Mlawer, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East, and will attend the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. 

Brittany Nadler, daughter of Jodi and LG Nadler, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East and will be attending Emory University.

Baylee Scharf, daughter of Karen and David Scharf, graduated from elementary school.

Jonathan Scharf, son of Karen and David Scharf, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East a silver academic honor award for business.  He will be attending SUNY Albany, majoring in Accounting. 

Aaron Siev, son of Toba Weinstein and Joel Siev, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School East.  He’ll be attending Lehigh University, where he was admitted to the Integrated Business and Engineering Honors Program.

Abigail Simon, daughter of Marcia and Don Simon, graduated from Walt Whitman High School.  She received academic scholarships from the Council of PTAs, Girls Leaders Organization (of which she was vice president), Spanish Honor Society and the American Sign Language Honor Society.  In the fall, Abigail will be attending the University of Delaware where she was named a University of Delaware Scholar and was admitted into the Honors program.

Carly Sirlin, daughter of Arlene and Richard Sirlin, graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelors degree in Social Work.  She will be attending graduate school at New York University this fall, pursuing her Masters in Social Work. 

Alli Travis, daughter of Lisa and David Travis, graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School West and will be going to Indiana University in Bloomington, where she’ll major in Elementary and Special Education.

Alex Wasserman, son of Michele and David Wasserman, moved up from Stimson Middle School, where he was on the High Honor Roll, to Walt Whitman High School.

Corey Wasserman, son of Michele and David Wasserman, graduated from Walt Whitman High School.  Corey made the Principal’s List and was Vice President of the Whitman chapter of the National Honor Society.  He’ll be attending Hofstra University this fall, where he received a Presidential Scholarship and acceptance into the Honors College and Legal Education Accelerated Program.



Achievements:

Lia Berger, daughter of Susane and Jeff Berger, a 5th grader at Solomon Schechter in Jericho, received a perfect score in level 3 NYSMMA for piano.  She also received second place in the Holocaust Museum’s Annual Middle School Contest in the Music Category for an original piece she wrote for the piano. 

Gennah Borg, daughter of Paula and Michael Borg, was elected to serve next year as 11th grade class delegate/representative for Student Government at Half Hollow Hills High School East.

Nolan Borg, son of Paula and Michael Borg, was inducted into National Junior Honor Society at West Hollow Middle School.

Dana Cohen, daughter of Maxine and Larry Cohen, and her husband, Vadim Izgur, completed their medical residencies and will relocate to Long Island to practice psychiatry.  They are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child this summer.

Sherri Cohen, daughter of Maxine and Larry Cohen, is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in Turkey for the 2010-2011 academic year.  She will teach English in a university and research how Judeo-Spanish has survived in the Turkish Jewish community.

Michael B. Greenblatt, son of Dorie and Mark Greenblatt, finished up freshman year at Tulane University on the Dean's List.

Our member Stu Lichtman, husband of Gwen, has been promoted to Professor of Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College.  He is an Attending Physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center specializing in gynecologic cancers and the care of older cancer patients.

Amanda Luper, daughter of Gail Glickman and Alan Luper, played on the Half Hollow Hills High School East junior varsity basketball and softball teams this year, and was also the only 9th grader to make the varsity tennis team.  Amanda scored in the 7th rank in Suffolk County on the Level 2 National French exam.

Jordan Schuman, daughter of Peri and Peter Schacknow, was inducted into National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, in addition to her continued membership in the International Thespian Honor Society and American Sign Language Honor Society.  Jordan just finished a term as USY’s Rakevet Division Social Action Tikkun Olam Vice President, and has been selected as a GSO Officer at Walt Whitman High School for the coming year, where she will be a senior.  Jordan is currently attending the University of Miami Summer Scholar Program as a Broadcast Journalism major.

Justin Schuman, son of Peri and Peter Schacknow, completed his freshman year on the Dean’s List as a Theatre major at Northwestern University.  Justin auditioned into the Musical Theatre Certificate Program, was accepted into the Dance minor, and added a concentration in Music.  This year, he appeared on stage in the roles of Larry Foreman and Gus Polock in “Cradle Will Rock”, and as the Snake Charmer in “Side Show”.  He’ll appear in “Kiss of the Spider Woman” when he returns to school this fall.
