Shabbat
Shalom!
If you can’t stand the heat…why not chill out and join us for
the coolest Shabbat Service around?!
The Summer of Ahava rolls on tomorrow evening, as we
gather again for a family-friendly, informal Friday Night Shabbat
Service at 6:30 PM, preceded by a half hour of schmoozing and
socializing with friends old and new. Join us at 6:00 PM for a
cold drink, a light bite, and the enjoyment of welcoming Shabbat
together!
On Saturday morning, Shabbat Services will get underway at 9:30
AM, and please also remember and support our weekday evening and Sunday
morning minyans at 8:00 PM and 9:15 AM, respectively.
This Sunday evening is SHJC Night
at the Engeman Theater, as we enjoy the fun, baseball-themed musical
“Damn Yankees”. To join us, call the
box office at 631-261-2900, or visit the Engeman’s
website, and mention the code “SHJC”.
You’ll get $5 off the ticket price and SHJC will receive a
donation of $10 back for each ticket purchased.
If you can’t make it on Sunday, the offer is good for many
other performances in the run!
Have you made your reservation for the Men’s
Club Adam Sherman Golf & Tennis Outing yet?
It’s on Monday, August 9 at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in
Commack, and it benefits both SHJC and the Sunrise Day Camp for kids
with cancer. Whether you
play golf, tennis, mah jongg, cards or nothing at all (!), you are
welcome and encouraged to attend. Enjoy
the day out on the course, the courts or the pool, or indoors in the
game room. If If you can’t
make it for the day, come for cocktails and dinner.
If you can donate a door or raffle prize, or sponsor a hole or
any part of the event, please contact Men’s Club Co-Vice President
Alan Pfeffer, mensclub@shjc.org
or 631-462-2341. Reservation
info for the outing is on the What’s
Up page on our website.
We’ve still got lots of summer left to enjoy, but while it’s quiet,
why not take the time to take care of some important business?
- Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the High Holiday
information you received in the mail. There
have been some important changes this year, notably, tickets will be
MAILED to members in good financial standing so you do not have to come
pick them up. To get your
tickets by mail, you MUST fill out and return the order form included in
the packet no later than August 15, and as noted, you must be in good
standing, having satisfied any past and current obligations to SHJC.
- Tickets may still be picked up in person.
Note the ticket pickup
times on your calendar and begin to fill out and return the
appropriate forms. The times are also listed on the calendar
on our website.
- For your convenience, you can also find the ticket order and
babysitting reservation forms on the What’s
Up page on our website.
- Once again, we have a great opportunity to order gorgeous floral
centerpieces and bouquets at a phenomenal price from Flowers by
Burton & Son. Whether
you’ll want a hostess gift or something for your own home, this is
terrific deal – exceptional quality at a fabulous price.
Find the order form on the What’s
Up page.
- We also have easy ordering and excellent pricing for your holiday
baked goods. Take a
moment to pre-order challah, cake and other goodies, and leave the
stress behind! See the
complete list on the What’s
Up page.
- Reserve your Sisterhood New
Year’s Greetings Booklet listings for the booklet distributed
during Rosh Hashanah. Find a
form on the What’s
Up page.
- Remember a loved one in the 5771 Yizkor
Booklet, which is used during all the Yizkor services throughout the
year. A reservation form is
available for this, too, on the What’s
Up page.
- If you can help out as an usher
during services, we can really use you!
Even one hour during Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur would be a huge
mitzvah! Get up, stretch
your legs and help with the smooth running of our services.
Email Warren Melnick if you can take a shift or two, warrenmelnick@gmail.com.
On the school front, the early bird deadline for SHMA, our area’s Conservative Hebrew High School, expires on
Monday. If you haven’t
registered your post-B’nai Mitzvah child yet for this wonderful
program, take advantage of the special rates and do so now!
You can print a reservation form from the What’s
Up page on our website.
Exciting plans continue to take shape as we celebrate our Golden
Anniversary year at SHJC. We’d
love you to be a part of the Photo
Montage being put together to commemorate the event.
To be included, email your digital images to Pam Schwartz, jsipromo@aol.com,
or drop them off the SHJC Office if you need help scanning.
Photos will be returned. Help
us compile our life in pictures! Bar/Bat
Mitzvahs, weddings, Purim celebrations, Sisterhood and Men’s Club
events, classroom celebrations…anything that shows the life and
vibrancy of our synagogue!
As SHJC celebrates our 50th
Anniversary, we note that in the world 50 years ago this week: on
July 25, the Woolworth lunch
counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, the location of a sit-in that
had sparked demonstrations by Negroes across the Southern United States,
serves its first meal to a black customer; from July 25 through July 28,
the Republican National Convention nominates Vice-President Richard
Nixon as its candidate for President of the United States, and Henry
Cabot Lodge, Jr., as its candidate to become the new Vice-President.
Other Dates and
Deadlines of Note: Sisterhood
Book Club (“A Tale of Love and Darkness”), 8/12; 50th
Anniversary Founders Brunch, 10/3; 50th Anniversary Gala,
10/23.
