Rabbi Hazzan

Rabbi Ian S. Jacknis

Rabbi Jacknis brought his love of Judaism and unique blend of warmth and spirituality to South Huntington Jewish Center in the summer of 1993, and quickly became known, both inside the synagogue and throughout the surrounding communities, as being welcoming, responsive, insightful and compassionate. During his tenure he has fostered a renewed feeling of unity and enthusiasm in the congregation, as well as a marked increase in membership. Shabbat services, especially, are infused with his special spirit, and he has brought a variety of new initiatives to SHJC. Rabbi Jacknis is highly respected by his congregants and his peers. He is a Past President of the Rabbinical Assembly of Nassau-Suffolk as well as the Suffolk Council of Jewish Organizations. The Rabbi also serves as the Jewish Chaplain to the Melville Fire Department. Rabbi Jacknis attended the undergraduate Joint Program of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and Columbia University, receiving two Bachelor Degrees in 1977. He later attended the Seminary's Rabbinical School, taking classes at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, at Neve Schechter in Jerusalem and at the Seminary's main campus in Manhattan. In May of 1983 he received both his Master's Degree and Rabbinic Ordination. Recently, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Jewish Theological Seminary.Upon ordination, Rabbi Jacknis assumed the pulpit of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he devotedly served the local Jewish (and non-Jewish) community. In 1988 he returned to New York, desiring to be closer to his family and a larger Jewish community, and to grow professionally. He became the Assistant Rabbi to Rabbi Joseph P. Sternstein at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights, his boyhood synagogue, where he maintains strong ties to this day. Rabbi Jacknis credits Temple Beth Sholom and his involvement in the Conservative Movement's youth program, United Synagogue Youth, with his early and enduring interest in Judaism.Rabbi Jacknis is married to our incomparable Rebbitzen, Suri Jacknis, who serves as the Director of the Morasha Institute at BJENY/SAJES. Hazzan Brian B. Shamash

Hazzan Brian Baruch Shamash came to South Huntington Jewish Center in the summer of 2004, and it was immediately evident that his passion for Jewish music would infuse our services with enthusiasm, vibrancy and beauty. He's brought us a magnificent voice, a great knowledge of both Ashkenazic and Sephardic music, and the energy and desire to communicate his pride and love of Jewish music and prayer to the entire congregation, from the youngest pre-schoolers to our esteemed founding members.Hazzan Shamash has unique and original ways of finding the voice in each of us. By incorporating middle-eastern hand percussion instruments, guitar and sign language in the classroom, he helps our hallowed prayers come alive. It is apparent that he strives to pray and serve us with both kavod and kavanah: honor, respect and intent. He inspires us with beautiful music, and has quickly become an integral part of our lives. The Hazzan holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in music from the University of Maryland and the University of Miami respectively, where he was awarded full scholarships. He is a member of the Cantors Assembly and the Jewish Ministers Cantors Association.Prior to coming to South Huntington Jewish Center, the Hazzan served Temple Israel of Greater Miami and B'nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton, Florida. When he's not serving the congregation, Brian enjoys snowboarding, skateboarding and swimming in the ocean. He and his lovely wife Emily recently are parents of two beautiful girls, Ella and Maya. History

Our History

The genesis of the South Huntington Jewish Center occurred in 1960 at a meeting in the home of one of our founders. A storefront on Route 110 across from what is now the Waldbaum’s shopping center and just north of the 7-11, served as our first schul. The first services were held there for the initial fifty families, as well as classes for the children. The first High Holiday services took place at the Sweet Hollow Presbyterian Church on Old Country Road. In 196- the land our synagogue stands on today was obtained through the services of Ruby Wagner and Leon Lazer. A ground breaking was held and many town dignitaries helped to dedicate the synagogue. After several interim Rabbis we were fortunate to hire Rabbi Morris Shapiro z"’l. Rabbi Shapiro was a highly respected Talmudic Scholar who taught us much and helped put SHJC on the map. Rabbi Shapiro was with us for twenty three years.After three more building expansions; One under Martin Liebman, another under Joel Girsky and the last under Alan Reid, Monique Mensch and Ed Rudofsky, SHJC has blossomed into the beautiful Shul we have all come to know and love. Today with a membership nearing five hundred families, we again find ourselves very fortunate to have the services of our affable and caring Rabbi Ian Jacknis and his incredible wife Suri. Indeed our cup runneth over with our artistic and creative Hazzan, Brian Baruch Shamash and his lovely wife, Dr. Emily Shamash. A whole new generation continues to grow, learn, share our sorrows and celebrate our simhas at SHJC.

Whether efforts are going toward providing holiday celebrations for students in our Religious school, presenting meaningful and varied Judaic (and other) courses of study, or planning entertaining and informative programming, this vital and exciting group of women contribute greatly and provide a wonderful tradition of service to our congregation. Marc Gerber , Presidentmensclub_shjc.orgThe SHJC Men’s Club has been revitalized over the past few years, becoming an even stronger link in the chain of Synagogue life. Men's Club is active in both religious and social functions, sponsoring holiday parties for our Religious School children and the Rabbi Morris Shapiro Fellowship program, among others. There is a spirit of friendship that pervades the group, and new members are always warmly welcomed. One of the highlights of the year is the annual Adam Sherman Golf Outing. Named in memory of one of our young members, this event is a full day of good food, golf, tennis, fun and prizes. It serves as a major SHJC fundraiser, and friends and others in the community are always welcome. Each spring and early summer, the Men's Club fields a softball team, which competes in the Long Island Temple League. The games are friendly (but competitive!), and spectators are most welcome. CLUB 45Club 45 is the building blocks for Kadima, but for 4th and 5th graders. It is a time for boys and girls to get comfortable at temple in a social way. Activities are planned to engage children in games, sports, arts and crafts, holiday and cultural celebrations and social action projects. KADIMAKadima is the international youth organization for Jewish pre-teens. Hazak was formed to create and foster bonds among congregants age 55 and over (but everyone is always welcome to attend their monthly meetings and events!) The name HAZAK is an acronym. The het stands for Hokhmah (wisdom), the zayan for Ziknah (maturity) and the kuph for Kadima (looking ahead). So Hazak notes that the "senior" represents cumulative knowledge, the ability to judge as zakeyn in a mature fashion, and has aspirations to move ahead during the decades remaining.Our Hazak/Club 55 meets monthly, generally on the second Tuesday, for a program and light lunch. Please join us.

Children are given the opportunities to grow and develop at their own pace, develop their own identity and experience relationships with both children and adults.Our teachers are trained and qualified early childhood educators who are skilled at developing a program that is multi-sensory, comfortable with age appropriate units and themes. The curriculum is filled with many hands-on, stimulating and enriched activities incorporating math, science, language arts and social science which teach and reinforce all the skills necessary to build strong foundations for future learning. Effective communication between parents and our staff is essential and critical to the development and well being of the children. We have many programs geared to the changing needs of our families. Our programs include parent & me classes, separation classes, before school care, after school activities as well as a twos, threes and fours program. Our enrichment classes include a music specialist, a hip-hop and physical education specialist as well as laptops in each classroom. Two playgrounds and a big indoor gym provide places for our children to socialize and interact daily. In addition to the beautifully decorated classrooms in the Rabbi and Rochelle Shapiro Educational Center, our students have weekly visits to our new, comfortable library which reinforces important literary development. General Information and Overall Philosophy:Our school is a partnership between the synagogue and the home, between the parent body and those who work to educate your children. It is our overarching goal to nurture the soul of every Jewish child and family.SHJC’s Religious School Vision Statement: Just as Abraham and Sara’s tent was an oasis in the desert, at South Huntington Jewish Center we welcome everyone to share in Jewish traditions, rituals and lifelong learning experiences. In our Learning Center, children are partners with teachers, parents, grandparents and other family members and congregants in creating powerful Jewish memories, performing acts of loving kindness (gemilut hasadim) and forming strong, proud Jewish identities. Our children perform mitzvot, develop a deep personal connection to Israel, read Torah, lead services and observe Shabbat and holidays through communal experiences, spirited musical events and innovative programming.Judaism affects every aspect of our lives - influencing our decisions, actions and beliefs. We want our children to be knowledgeable Jews and to experience the joy in everyday Jewish living. We also want our students to be literate, active and involved members of the Jewish community. At SHJC our students come to understand and appreciate the influence Judaism has on their lives as they prepare to take their places as active, thoughtful members of our Jewish community. South Huntington Jewish Center is committed to providing our students with a solid knowledge base and the skills necessary to lead meaningful, exciting and fulfilling Jewish lives, thereby making Judaism and lifelong Jewish learning integral parts of their lives. We have a dedicated staff, great lay leadership and the strong support of our clergy and congregation. Much of the learning in our Religious School is experiential and hands-on, providing our students and families with many opportunities to live and learn Jewishly. Synagogue membership is a requirement for families whose children are entering grades Alef through Hei (3rd through 7th grade in public school). While strongly encouraged, membership is not required for students in our primary grades of Gan, Simha 1 or Simha 2 (those entering grades K, 1 and 2).Every Jewish child deserves to receive a quality Jewish education, and we have the responsibility to provide them with the finest educational resources available in a warm and supportive environment in order to help them learn about their heritage and their faith. It is a joyous, holy and sacred responsibility that we take very seriously.Our renowned primary program for Grades K-2 meets once per week; parents have a choice of which days their child attends. The curriculum introduces the children to the Hebrew language and includes an understanding of synagogue life, an introduction to the Torah and Bible, studying and celebrating Jewish holidays, learning about Israel. The atmosphere is creative and supportive, and different instructional methods are used to reinforce the learning. About 75% of our students begin Religious School with us in the primary grades; it is a great foundation for the later grades. Grades 3 - 7, our classes Alef, Bet, Gimel, Dalet and Hei, meet twice per week. The curriculum is experiential, dynamic, engaging. Our students are part of a wonderful and nurturing learning community. Our curricular topics include Ivrit (Hebrew), Torah, Mitzvot and Ethics, Israel, Jewish History and Traditions, Holidays and Celebrations, Jewish Cultural and Fine Arts, and Holocaust Studies. Students in Dalet and Hei receive additional study of the Shabbat Service as they approach their Bar/Bat Mitzvah year. Tefillah/Prayer is an integral part of our curriculum, as are acquiring the skills to read Torah and Haftarah.From the earliest ages our students are given the opportunity to participate in the leading Shabbat services from the bimah.. Special class Shabbatot are held annually, with Kitah Alef holding a beautiful Consecration service, Kitah Bet leading a Friday night service, Kitah Gimel leading Shabbat morning services, and Kitah Dalet reading Torah and leading the entire Torah service on a Shabbat morning. Our Hei students lead the congregation in a Maariv/Havdallah service. Indeed, by the time SHJC Religious School students become B'nai Mitzvah, they are already quite comfortable on the bimah, strong and confident in their knowledge and skills.

Adult Education

As a testament to our belief that learning is a lifelong process, Adult Learning and Continuing Education opportunities abound at SHJC. Among the many programs we offer are:Adult Bat Mitzvah Class - Rabbi Jacknis instituted this very special course of study a couple of years ago, and eighteen women underwent the thrilling journey. Most couldn't even read Hebrew when the classes began, but by their completion, each proudly ascended the SHJC bimah to lead the Shabbat morning service and add her unique voice to our collective heritage. An emotional high point was reached as everyone read either a Torah or Haftarah portion. The next class of future adult B'nai Mitzvah is in the planning stages. Contact Rabbi Jacknis for additional information. Rabbi's Tuesday Morning class - Every year, Rabbi Jacknis picks a new text to read and learn from. This year the class studied "Searching for Meaning in Midrash: Lessons for Everyday Living" by Michael Katz and Gershon Schwartz. The class is led by the Rabbi, but there is much give and take, as everyone benefits from the group dynamic. You can join the 10:30 AM class at any time. Read Hebrew America - Based on the successful format developed by the National Jewish Outreach Program, we hold this annual “crash course” in reading Hebrew. There are levels for complete beginners and for intermediate Hebrew readers. Sisterhood Book Club - Part educational, part social, the Sisterhood Book Club is open to anyone. Several times a year, the group decides on works of popular fiction to discuss (usually, although some non-fiction selections have been chosen), and meets in an atmosphere of friendship and discovery. Jewish values and themes are popular topics for conversation, and refreshments are always served (of course!). Conservative Judaism 101 - The Seminar on Conservative Judaism (a/k/a Conservative Judaism 101) is a one-session introduction to Conservative Judaism developed by SHJC Past-President Ed Rudofsky in consultation with Rabbi Jacknis, and led by Ed and the Rabbi. Participants are introduced to the historical origins and philosophy of the Conservative Movement, the role of the major "arms" of the Movement, and the role of the Rabbi as the Mara D'Atra of the Congregation.

We concentrate on promoting Jewish values and learning through interactive student-parent workshops for each grade in the Religious School. Topics range from “Shabbat Land”, “Celebrating Israel” and “Creating Jewish Bedtimes” to “Why Be Jewish?” and “On Becoming a Mitzvah Maven”.Congregational activities include celebrating Sukkot with “Pizza in the Hut”; and family celebrations of Havdallah, TuB’Shvat and Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Parenting/book discussion groups explore parenting skills and issues through a Jewish perspective. The Dalet Hesed Corps (6th graders and their families) links the Jewish values of hesed (kindness) and tikkun olam (healing the world) to real-life experiences. Our synagogue has many areas in which dedicated people work to ensure the success of our day-today activities and continued health for the future.In addition to Sisterhood and Men's Club, please consider lending your talents, time and abilities to any of the following endeavors:Finance Committee - responsible for planning and implementing SHJC's fiscal plan.
